On Thursday morning, the Journal Record published an article examining the use of OR bonds to alleviate overcrowding within the Oklahoma County jail system. OBA advised caution toward overuse of this method for pre-trial release.
“Today, an article in the Journal Record was published discussing the OR program in Oklahoma County. While we do understand there are times an OR bond may be a useful alternative to private bail, such as in the case of Amanda Freeman, we stress overuse of this method will result in higher rates of failure to appear.
Bondsmen have a financial stake in ensuring defendants return to court, which breaks the cycle of recidivism and provides justice to victims of crime, and come at no cost to the court system and taxpayers.”
